The first egg!

By Rebecca

Today was the long-awaited day! I herded the chickens to their coop to lock them in for the night when I noticed this little treasure sitting in the dirt just inside the door…

I thought I was seeing things, especially since I dreamed of our chickens laying brightly colored and patterned eggs last night.

Once I cupped the little egg in my hand, I knew this was the real thing. I REALLY wanted to know whose it was. I held up the egg to each of the chickens, one by one. All of them pecked at it with curiosity except Wynona. She just turned her head away. What does it all mean!?! Maybe she laid the egg. I decided it must have been laid this morning before I let the chickens out of the coop for the day.

I walked inside the house, still dazed and in shock. Then I ran up the stairs, into the hallway, displayed the egg and declared loudly to Matt, “It’s a miracle!”

The girls came running out from bed, saw the egg and jumped up and down. Asia screamed, “Daddy, the chickens laid an egg! It’s a MIRACLE!” Matt looked up from his book with mild interest as Brianna and I joined Asia in completely freaking out for joy.

After a thorough search for any other eggs, and a second egg-layer verification test (none of the chickens showed any interest this time), we compared the egg to a store-bought egg. So cute!

We’re so proud of our chickens.
